The Tereshchenkas are a prominent family from Glukhiv Oblast, which received noble status in 1870.
Hospitals, shelters, gymnasiums, and schools were built and operated at the expense of the Tereshchenkos. They were connoisseurs, art collectors and patrons. It is thanks to Mykola and Fedor Artemovich, as well as their children Ivan, Oleksandr, Varvara and Olga, that Kyiv now has a collection of state museums: T.G. Shevchenko, Ukrainian Fine Art, Western and Eastern Art.
Charitable activity of family representatives during the First World War was important. Already in 1914, Mykhailo Tereshchepko opened and maintained a 300-bed infirmary at his own expense. Soon, other members of the family opened several more infirmaries and founded an asylum and a shoe workshop for crippled lower ranks. Mykola Tereshchenko financially supported the First Commercial College, the Polytechnic Institute, the Kyiv-Podilskyi Women's Gymnasium, the City Museum of Antiquities and Art, and the Pyroghov Hospital.
