Pre WWI, Post Span/Amer War Collins No. 37 U.S. Signal Corps Brush Cutting Knife Machete measuring 22.5" OAL, with a blade length of 18".  The U.S. Army Signal Corps purchased 5,000 Collins NO. 37, 18 inch machetes, with the leather washer handles back in 1906.  These machetes were stamped on the right side of blade, "SCUSA" (Signal Corps USA) and had the Collins Logo-Spanish stamp on the opposite side.  These were intended for use in clearing trails for laying communication lines and related works.  The need for better communications was realized by the US Army after the Spanish American War and Philippines Insurrection.
This machete has all the correct markings, with blade still showing much original finish with age patina, wear, use, scratches.  The front half of the washers or less have some looseness on the handle and wiggle up and down a bit along with the brass guard. (took photo with them pushed up)  Pommel end is tight. Comes with a later period leather sheath, unmarked and in very good condition.   See photos for further details.   A rare, hard to find item.
