DESCRIPTION: Here is a vintage, 1880 era I'd say, magicians trick plate. It is constructed of a Villeroy and Boch / Mettlach ceramic deep plate or low profile soup bowl with dragon border and the 6 1/4" 'well' has a beautifully constructed and hand painted tin insert with a two part hinged trap door. The paint on the tin looks like an enamel type paint. *** A Finely Made & Constructed Piece *** Truly Unique ? ***
MEASUREMENTS: 9 1/2" across x 1 5/8" tall, weighs 1 lb. 7 oz.
CONDITION: mostly considering this is very good and clean overall condition. There is a (tight) crack in the ceramic plate itself as seen on the backside and less noticed on the front, and the mechanism has a spring in it I assume which no longer engages. The small brass underside lever (release?) does not move, but I don't want to force it. I have yet to find anything comparable to this plate. The last picture is a screenshot shown for reference of an old painted tin vanishing handkerchief plate.
