Beach Hibiscus (Malvaceae) is an evergreen sub-tropical/tropical shrub or small tree, reaching a height of about 30 feet. Its natural habitat is coastal swamps, therefore, it has a high salt tolerance. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. This particular variety of Beach Hibiscus has a very distinct leaf: elongated, undulate and creamy yellow with green stripes. Talipariti tiliaceum var. populneus blooms year-round, producing a light yellow flower with a dark maroon center, changing over the course of the day to a deep orange/red before falling.




The wood of H. tiliaceus has a specific gravity of 0.6. It has been used in a variety of applications, such as seacraft construction, firewood, and wood carvings. It is easy to plane and turns well, so it is regarded by many as a high quality furniture wood. Plant fibers taken from the stems have traditionally been used in rope making, while its bark has been used like cork, in sealing cracks in boats. The bark and roots may be boiled to make a cooling tea to cool fevers, and its young leafy shoots may be eaten as vegetables. Native Hawaiians used the wood to make ʻiako (spars) for waʻa (outrigger canoes), mouo (fishing net floats), and ʻau koʻi (adze handles). Kaula ʻilihau (cordage) was made from the bast fibers. Hau would be used to make ʻama (canoe floats) if the preferred wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) was unavailable.

Hibiscus tiliaceus is widely used in Asian countries as a subject for the art of bonsai, especially Taiwan. The finest specimens are taken from Kenting National Park. Lending itself to free grafting, the leaf size is reduced fairly quickly. Its leaves are also used in cooking, as trays for steamed rice cakes (粿).

In Indonesia H. tiliaceus is also used for fermenting tempeh. The undersides of the leaves are covered in downy hairs known technically as trichomes to which the mold Rhizopus oligosporus can be found adhering in the wild. Soybeans are pressed into the leaf, and stored. Fermentation occurs resulting in tempeh.



Mahoe prefers full sun and regular water, making it an ideal addition to any garden. It's a fast growing tropical plant, so pruning can be a necessity to keep it within bounds.

Its flowers bloom from summer to winter and are colored red, crimson, or vinous. As the blooms age, they transition from vibrant yellow and orange hues to deep red. This makes for a beautiful display, and the flowers typically attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden.

Mahoe can be grown in USDA zones 9-11. Planting it in a pot can be a great alternative for those living in colder climates as it can be brought in and placed outdoors once temperatures begin to rise. When grown in a pot, it should be sited in an area that receives full sun, but it should also be protected from the wind. The plant should be watered regularly to ensure that the soil stays consistently moist, but not soggy. Additionally, fertilizing and pruning should be done on a regular basis.

Mahoe is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance tree or shrub, with its beautiful foliage, colorful flowers, and ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies making it an ideal choice for any garden.

Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot.
