Hoffmannia ghiesbreghtii (Taffeta Plant) is a large shrub, growing between 5 and 10 feet tall in its native habitat of Guatemala and Mexico. It is tolerant of both full sun and semi-shade and prefers regular amounts of water to thrive. The foliage is its main ornamental feature. The dark velvety green leaves on the upper side, and red-purple underneath, give the plant a distinct and attractive look. The star-shaped yellow flowers with red spots are quite attractive, although they are not as showy as other plants.
This plant is hardy in USDA growing zones 9-11, making it an interesting addition to many gardens. Additionally, if grown in cold regions, it is best to cultivate the Hoffmannia ghiesbreghtii in a pot,.
When it comes to caring for Taffeta Plant, regular watering and fertilizing are essential for optimal growth. For watering, a weekly deep watering regime is beneficial and for feeding, use a balanced liquid fertilizer. Pruning is also required to keep the shrub in shape and this should be done in early spring.
Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer.
