This is quite an early tramp art piece, made from cigar box wood. It was found at an auction in the deep south many years ago. Standing on pyramid feet, lines of layering frame ebonized panels on all four sides and the top. It is quite likely that the gold dabs, or polka dots, were added some time after the box's creation but are also old judging by the amount of oxidation on the outside. The colors are much brighter on the inside from the box remaining closed. The interior walls are lined with needlepoint patterns. There is a very small brass knob for opening and closing and a fancy brass escutcheon on the front. The lock has no key. Where there is often in tramp art a mirror under the lid, this has a pattern of gold dots. The dabs of gold paint are probably not original to this example but are definitely old. Very folky! Superb condition but with the lining paper on the floor torn. This one's a beaut. It has been museum exhibited. The size is about 6x9x10.U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
