29th Waffen Granadier Division – Defense of Anzio Brigehead - Italy April 1944

Many military historians have badmouthed the overall performance of the Italian Army during WWII.

It is true that some of the early war Italian Army military campaigns such as the Greek and Libyan campaigns were disasters, but the reality is that there were numerous Italian military units during the war that fought very well and very bravely. The Italian 29th Waffen SS Vendetta Battalion was one of those units.

After the British and American invaded Sicily and southern mainland Italy, the Italian army fracture into two entities, one sided with the British and Americans and the other sided with the Germans who were occupying most of northern and central Italy. This period of time could also be called the Italian civil war because on a number of occasions Italian military units from opposing sides fought each other.

The 29th Waffen SS was composed of Italian militia volunteers that were integrated into the German Armed forces.

In April 1944 three battalions ot the 29th Wafen SS fought against Allied bridgeheads of Anzio and Nettuno with surprisingly good results.

There are numerous books and videos on the Allied landings and battle at Anzio in western Italy and many completely leave out the participation of Italian military units during the battle.

This is one of the rarest and hard to find of the Twisting Toyz WWII Italian Army figures that were made.

BTG = Battalion \ Vendetta = Vengeance

Aurelio’s Battalion was named Vengeance.

Rottenfuhrer = A rank of section or squad leader.

Military Figure Notes:

Aurelios face is wrapped in manufacturer’s protective plastic, so that is why his face looks blurry in the picture.

Some of the black paint on Aurelios boots has faded due to the age of the figure that I would estimate to be around 20 years old.

The figure, uniform, weapons and accessories are Mint In Box, the box is in good shape with minor shelf wear.
