Historic sterling silver gilt golf trophy presented to Gordon Brand Jnr, a member of the winning European Ryder Cup team which beat the USA team by 15 points to 13 with the tournament taking place at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, USA. This was the first time in 60 years that the United States Ryder Cup team lost on home soil, making the tournament probably the most historic its long history.

These iconic trophies presented to the winning players rarely come up for sale and I believe this example is the first from this era to do so, certainly from the European team.

The trophy itself is fixed to a wooden plinth and has a slim stem supporting a larger twin-handled bowl. On one side is an applied crest of the American Eagle with Stars & Stripes adjacent to the British Lion & the Union Jack (the design did not change when the British team was expanded to include European players).

On the other side is engraved "THE RYDER CUP".

The trophy lid is particularly iconic with the finial depicting a golfer in tweed plus fours ready to drive on a raised platform.

There is a silver gilt plaque around the plinth which is engraved "GORDON BRAND Jnr" & "MUIRFIELD VILLAGE 1987".

Included with the trophy is a large ORIGINAL press agency photograph depicting Gordon Brand Jnr taken on 13th September 1986 at Sunningdale.

Provenance: In October 2021 Mullocks Auctions sold a large collection of Gordon Brand Jnr's golfing memorabilia and I was fortunate to be able to acquire his two iconic Ryder Cup trophies for 1987 & 1989 (see other listing).

Sterling Silver Trophy Cup & Cover (including attached wooden plinth): Weight 776.7 gm. Height: 300 mm. Diameter of base: 100 mm. Hall Mark: London 1988. Maker's Mark: JB.

Gordon Brand Jnr (19th August 1958 - 31st July 2019): Brand was a Scottish professional golfer who played on the European Tour, winning 8 times & later played on the European Senior Tour, winning twice. He played in the 1979 Walker Cup but his most memorable achievements were playing a key part in two European Ryder Cup Victories in 1987 & 1989.

Sadly, Gordon Brand Jnr died aged just 60 in 2019 which is why his Ryder Cup trophies became available so early. He died suddenly from a heart attack at the London Golf Club in Ash, Kent following a practice round for the Staysure PGA Senior Championship.

1987 Ryder Cup: The 27th Ryder Cup tournament took place at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin Ohio between 25th & 27th September 1987. The European team won their second consecutive competition by 15 points to 13 and in doing so became the first European Team to beat the US team on their home soil after an unbeaten run of 13 - 0 spanning 60 years, an iconic victory!

This was Gordon Brand Jnr's first Ryder Cup in a team led by non-playing captain, Tony Jacklin (please note that Tony Jacklin's Ryder Cup trophies are on permanent display at the Scottish Museum of Golf in St. Andrews).

Summary: Ryder Cup trophies from winning teams rarely come up for sale and are even rarer on eBay, in fact I have not seen any others.  The 1987 European Winner's Trophy won by a named team member is a real one-off & a rare opportunity for serious collectors of iconic Ryder Cup memorabilia to enhance their collection. Good luck!
