2021 San Francisco Mint Silver Proof Set Crossing the Delaware Quarter

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Advance Releases

This 2021 Washington Crossing the Delaware quarter may be a one-year anomaly.   The US Mint completed two series of quarters in 2021.  The first series was the State Quarters from 1999-2009.  The second series was the America the Beautiful Quarters from 2010-2021.  The US Mint chose to revert to the original John Flanagan Washington obverse design used from 1932-1998 for the final 9 months of 2021.  They additionally, chose a new reverse, the Washington Crossing the Delaware on December 25, 1776 design.  Then Congress authorized a new quarter series to begin in 2022, the Women's Quarters series.  The question remains unanswered on whether this 2021 quarter will be a one-year design, or will it continue after the Women's Quarters series.

The 2021 S Proof Washington Crossing the Delaware Silver Quarter graded by NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo with Advanced Releases designation.  After completion of the 56-coin America the Beautiful series the US Mint reverted to the original John Flanagan obverse and developed a new reverse, the Washington Crossing the Delaware design.  70 is a perfect grade for a coin.  This coin is from the 7-Coin Silver Proof Set from the San Francisco Mint.  The special San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge label further specializes this coin and helps call to attention the coins mintage at the US Mint San Francisco Mint facility.

General George Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter featuring an obverse (heads) design that marks a return to the familiar depiction of George Washington by John Flanagan as it appeared on the quarter from 1932 to 1998. The image was modified for the 50 State Quarters, the DC and U.S. Territories Quarter, and the America the Beautiful Quarters Programs. In this revived depiction, Washington’s portrait is larger, and with higher relief. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2021.” The reverse (tails) design features General George Washington commanding his troops through the overnight crossing of the ice-choked Delaware River prior to the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolutionary War. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "CROSSING THE DELAWARE," and "QUARTER DOLLAR.”

Advanced Release is the only official designation made by the US Mint.  Advanced Releases coins are coins sold to the 18 largest coin buyers from the US Mint but represent only a fraction of the coins sold by the US Mint.  To be eligible for the Advanced Releases designation NGC must have the coins before the official release date from the US Mint.  The US Mint normally provides Advanced Releases coins to the largest dealers two days before the official release, meaning they must be immediately submitted to the grading companies to receive this extremely limited and desirable designation.

Proof coins are coins that the US Mint makes differently than standard circulating coins used for change.  Proof coins are manufactured by striking the coin numerous times under increased pressure to make the field (flat portion of the coin) have a mirrored finish.  Proof coins are specifically made for collectors since they have better eye appeal than standard circulating coins. Grading companies usually annotate proof coins with either PR or PF before the number grade.  Additionally, exceptional coins will be given Ultra Cameo or DCAM (deep cameo) designation for coins where the difference between the surface of the coin’s devices and the mirrored finish of the coin’s field are very pronounced.
