What is Mucosamin?
Mucosamin has been formulated to help in the regeneration of oral mucosa. It is also used to help with the process of healing areas within the mouth when ulcerations have appeared. As well as helping to heal the mouth it will also help to reduce sensitivity within the mouth.
Mucosamin Mouthwash should specifically be used:
- At the start of radiological therapy or chemotherapy to help to reduce the incidence of oral mucositis.
- To help in the treatment of radiotherapy or chemotherapy induced oral mucositis.
- To help in the treatment of ulcerative pathologies of the oral cavity (e.g. pemphigus, pemphigoid, erosive lichen planus).
- To help in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
- To help in the treatment following surgical operations on the tongue and oral mucosa.
- To help in the treatment of burning mouth syndrome.2
How is Mucositis treated?
Your cancer care team will recommend suitable treatment for you. This might include painkillers or medicines to ease pain. They also might recommend a mouthwash or spray. The mouthwash or spray you are usually given will be Mucosamin and this can help to prevent, relieve and treat oral mucositis caused by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Mucosamin helps to prevent oral mucositis developing, reduce symptoms of dry mouth, relieves pain and helps to heal lesions.
Alongside its healing properties, Mucosamin forms a soothing layer to reduce pain and help your mouth to feel hydrated.
How does it work?
Mucosamin helps to:
- Prevent oral mucositis
- Reduce symptoms of dry mouth
- Relieve pain
- Heal lesions
Mucosamin is made up of two main components; Hyaluronic acid (HA) and amino acids.
Hyaluronic acid (HA)
HA acts as an antioxidant to protect tissues from damaging free radicals, and provides a ?scaffold’ to allow wounds to heal.
Amino acids
Meanwhile, amino acids assist HA to help ulcers to heal properly and maintain a healthy mucosal layer.
