The present scroll is written in the characteristic thirteenth-century monumental Sephardic square script. In addition to the script, there are textual indicators that enable to identify the custom in which a manuscript was produced by examining certain scribal traditions which varied according to location. The biblical passages that lend themselves to this type of analysis are the two poetic songs included in the Pentateuch, "The Song at the Sea" (Shirat-haYam) Exodus 15 and "The Song of Moses" (ha-Azinu) Deuteronomy 32. The layout of the "Song of the Sea" in the present scroll follows the original, authentic version of Rabbi Meir ben Todros ha-Levi Abulafia (Meir ben Todros HaLevi Abulafia (c. 1170 – 1244, Burgos, Spain), also known as the Ramah) where the final two lines of the song are not divided into only two sections, while Maimonides, following the Aleppo Codex, felt that the two final lines should be devided into two sections. Abulafia also differed from Maimonides on the manner of writing the other epic biblical poem, "The Song of Moses." According to Abulafia and in agreement with the ancient Spanish traditions, Abulafia held the opinion that the poem should be written in 70 lines, as in our scroll, while Maimonides, again following the Aleppo Codex, felt that it should be written in 67 lines. In Sephardic Torah-scrolls written after the expulsion in the lands of the Sephardic diaspora, both songs are always according to Meir ha-Levi Abul'afia, while only the Yemenites follow Maimonides' order in both songs

Sephardi Jews in Italy

Since 1442, when Spain took over Naples, many Sephardi Jews moved to Southern Italy. After being expelled from Spain (1492) and Portugal (1495), they settled in central and northern Italy. Isaac Abarbanel was one notable refugee.

Over time, more Jews who had converted to Christianity in Spain and Portugal joined them. Despite facing prosecution for practicing Judaism, they settled in Italy, avoiding areas controlled by the Pope. The Popes allowed some settlement in Ancona due to trade links with Turkey.

Main settlements:

  1. Venice: Recognizing the benefits of educated Spanish-speaking Jews, they were confined to the Venetian Ghetto.
  2. Cities under Este princes' rule, like Reggio, Modena, and Ferrara.
  3. In 1593, Portuguese Jews were permitted to live and trade in Pisa and Livorno by Ferdinando I de' Medici, fostering the Jewish community in Livorno.
