The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.

Dr Mary Edwards Walker is featured on the 3rd coin released for 2024 and the 13th coin in this program. This offering is for one Clad Proof Dr Mary Edwards Walker US Mint American Woman Quarter from the San Francisco (24WP) Mint Set.

Dr Mary Edwards Walker (November 26, 1832 – February 21, 1919), commonly referred to as DrMary Walker, was an American abolitionist, prohibitionist, prisoner of war, and surgeon. She is the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Mary Walker volunteered at the outbreak of American Civil War as a surgeon – first for the Army but was rejected because she was a woman (despite having kept a private practice for many years). She was offered the role of a nurse but declined and chose to volunteer as a surgeon for the Union Army as a civilian.

The reverse (tails) depicts Dr. Mary Edwards Walker holding her pocket surgical kit, with the Medal of Honor on her uniform, and surgeon’s pin at her collar. After receiving the award, she continued to wear the Medal of Honor for the rest of her life. The left side of the design showcases the details of the Medal of Honor.

The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington.
