Svenska möbler. Folkhemsform i ull, jakaranda, furu och bok 1949-1970. Siesing, Andreas; Bokförlaget Atlantis: Stockholm; 2015; Swedish language; 640 pages 3100 grams hardback

Extensive work on Swedish post-war furniture. In depth research well photographed examples of hundreds of Swedish post war chairs in particular with a number by Danish designers.

The book is divided into three sections. The largest, taking up nearly half of the 600 plus pages, is ‘Seating Furniture’, with the remaining two being ‘Tables’ and ‘Other Furniture’, which includes storage, serving trolleys, some mirrors, a couple of beds, and a barbecue. In total, over 700 furniture designs are presented, each accompanied by a supporting short text focusing either on the piece itself or its context. … our knowledge of this era has hitherto been limited, with only certain key architect-designers, including Yngve Ekström, Bruno Mathsson and Carl Malmsten looming large. Thanks to this book, we now know significantly more about numerous others, such as Alf Svensson, Bertil Fridhagen, Folke Ohlsson and David Rosén. Many more, such as Lennart Bender, Nils Jonsson and Svante Skogh, previously lacked the recognition they deserve. In addition, a number of non-Swedes designing for Swedish producers are discussed, in particular Danish architect-designers, who were in great demand at the time. The Danish furniture industry was regarded with great envy by Swedish manufacturers, keen to know how factory-made furniture could have such an impeccable feel of craftsmanship. Large-scale manufacturers such as Dux, IKEA, and NK are discussed as well as smaller and lesser-known ones like AB Trensums Fåtöljfabrik (‘armchair factory’) in Trensum, Westbergs Möbler of Tranås and Abrahamssons Möbelfabrik AB in Taberg.
