Works originally publishedbefore 1850 but reprinted, or, in the case of periodicalpublications, continued, in or after that date are also included, sothat the several significant and influential works of the 1830s and1840s are not omitted. The coverage includes all facets of chessplay, records of matches, tournaments and the games of individualplayers, works on, arnd collections of, chess problems, historicalworks, periodicals and other serial publications, works on the gamesderived from chess and. Literary works in which reference to chess ismade. The coverage excludes compendiums of games (e.g. Hoyle) whichinclude chess sections, general encyclopaedias (e.g. Britannica),dictionaries and other reference works which include chess articles,magazine articles unless in book form (there are a few exceptions tothis general rule, such as comprehensive chess periodical coverage ofa chess tournament), programme. Of chess events, unpublishedmanuscripts, works specifically on oriental games with similaritiesto chess (unless derived from chess), and publications, such asrules, relevant only to a particular club or society. Within thesedefined limits this work aims to be comprehensive. A separate entryis not, however, made for every identical reprint; one printing,usually the first, of an edition is selected for detailed analysisand description and reprint dates are noted in the entry.

An annotatedbibliography of English-language books and articles on all aspects ofchess (except fiction and works on other games derived from chess).It covers the period from 1968-88 and represents a continuation ofBetts' "Chess - An Annotated Bibliography of Works Published inthe English Language 1850-1968" (G K Hall, 1974). Lists alleditions and reprints, and all known periodicals active in the periodcovered. Includes several hundred entries not listed in standardbibliographical sources. The need for such a work is indicated by theexplosion of chess publishing since the publication of Betts. Thepresent work contains more entries for the 20-year period than Bettscovered over 120 years.
