With the success of the original XR3i, coupled with the growing popularity of the hot hatch, it meant the XR3i once again featured in the Escort line-up when Ford unveiled its revised Mk4 back in 1986. The new XR3i received a revised body, with smoother front, along with a new style dashboard, better security and minor revisions to the suspension, which were designed to reduce lift under acceleration and dive under braking. The ride height was 10 mm higher than its predecessor, giving a more supple ride. The new model offered the availability of ABS, engine-wise the Bosch fuel-injected 1,597cc CVH engine was carried over unchanged from the Mk3 version. Better aerodynamics afforded by the restyled exterior and effective front and rear spoilers, saw the latest XR gain a higher top speed of 118 mph, it also returned slightly better mpg. In 1987  gear shift quality was improved, then in 1989  it was fitted with the adaption of Ford’s own EEC-IV fuel injection and engine management. The updated CVH was identified by bold ‘EFI’ lettering on top of the inlet manifold. Also in 1989 Ford reworked the cylinder head and fitted plastic sections to the air intake running over the rocker cover, along with revised manifold and gas-flowed ports, plus new camshaft timing.

As with our 1990 car, in 1989 the XR3i saw the introduction of ‘Zolda’ trim, named after the Belgian Zolder circuit, plus an extended centre console, colour-coded bumpers and variable intermittent settings for the wipers, while Autumn 1989 ushered in the final changes of a rear spoiler with drooping sides, Cosworth-style lattice alloys and a new front bumper with deep air intakes.

Our Ford Escort 1.6 XR3i was first registered March 1990. Finished in Radiant Red with Grey Zolda trim, complimented by Cosworth style Lattice alloy wheels. Our car is fitted with central locking, electric windows, electric mirrors, heated front screen and sunroof. Having had only 3 previous owners, this is a lovely example inside and out and with a nicely detailed engine bay. A car that really speaks for its self, current milage reading 86,000  miles. The current MOT is to July 2024. Delivery available.
