Marked 'GREAT MING JIAJING PERIOD MADE'.

Emperor Jiajing 1522-1568 was the 12th Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He ascended to the throne young. He was notoriously cruel. He demoted, tortured or killed officials that disagreed with him. He spent most of his time and money getting Daoist alchemists to search for an elixir that would prolong his life.

This wine ewer is also decorated with a 5 claw dragon. A pattern exclusively only for use by the Emperor. Porcelain for the people was forbidden to use it.

This piece is also very pretty, decorated all over with tiny leaves and flowers.

Wucai, '5 colours', or less, as many pieces have. Basically it means a limited colour palette.

Height 43cm. Large size. An impressive decorative statement piece.

Condition is perfect.
