Over struck by GB embossed revenue, 2/6 die E, Barber # 3, used 1757-1772,
With George III cypher stamp on back, plate 1, not recut, used 1762-1773,
The document is a one year lease at 5/- per annum for a house including cottages, earth orchard, stables and out buildings
in Suttons Aubo, Yorkshire, dated 1st September 1767….
On vellum / parchment, approximately 21x 13 inches, 535 x 335 mm,
This is the 2nd of only two America dies found in a Yorkshire archive…the 1st (2/- value) sold earlier this year for US$1740
These stamps were prepared in England on blank sheets of vellum for use in the American colonies….
by the stamp act of 1765. They were strongly resisted by the local population with the cry of NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION! Very few were actually used, so the British withdrew the stamps/ documents and returned them to England,
where some were reused by OVER STRIKING the America dies with English values.
The failed 1765 stamp act led (in no small part) to the American War of Independence,
