- Vintage David Thomas Aboriginal Stone Carving Sculpture 1986 Inuit Art. Signed on the bottom, David Thomas, and dated 1986. This is most likely by David Thomas, Jr. of the Six Nations Reserve (Ontario, Canada). He is from the Onondaga Wolf Clan. It is a "Medicine Mask Iroquois Stone Sculpture" (They no longer call themselves 'Iroquois' but use their original name in its place, Haudenosaunee). Probably made from steatite, a soft soapstone found in the southern Ohio valley, carved traditionally, to make pipes. Steatite has been used by the Canadian Haudenosaunee to reproduce their traditional wooden masks (sacred/ceremonial and carved in a ceremony from living trees). This appears to be a stone version of the medicine masks:Featuring a Man's face and an Eagle .In Great condition, Has some marks and nicks to the soapstone Please see pictures , just a beautiful piece.SIZE: 6 inches tall, by 3 3/4 inches front to back. 2 1/2 inches wide .
