A square mouth socket axe with a strong loop, part of a founders hoard from near Epping, Essex.
The axe is 74 mm long, 155g, cutting edge is 37 mm.
This is a heavy, strongly-made  axe for its size.
Silicone moulds taken from the original, lost-wax investment.
The hoard consisted of axes of this type only. There were four distinct sizes in the hoard, this axe being the smallest.
The largest axe was packed with tweezers and needles.
More of a carpenter's tool than a woodcutter's axe.
