Antique 18th/19th Century Hog Scraper Push Up Candle Holder 7" Tall Farm Patina

3.75” x 3.75” x 7”

6 oz

Neat antique hog scraper candle holder. This has the hallmarks of a pre 1860 sheet iron piece made in England. However I can't say for sure. They didn't start making these in America until the mid 1800's, before then they imported them from England. Apparently even fairly well off folks in America would use these in the spirit of unpretentious American practicality. The wealthy British preferred fancier candle holders. It has a nice black and rusted patina. One can imagine what all this has seen.

There is an inconsistancy on the top rim which is probably where the chair hook broke off. There is extensive wear to the finish and the bottom is bent possibly from hog scraping, who knows. The stick itself isn’t fully straight up and down. The lever to push the candle up and down works great. Over 200 years and still working, unbelieveable. Please see pictures for condition detail.
