Thomson (1837-1921) was a pioneering Scottish photographer, geographer and traveler. He was the first western photographer to travel widely throughout China and the Far East, documenting the people and landscapes of eastern cultures. Upon returning home his work among the street people of London cemented his reputation, and his work is regarded as classic social documentation which laid the groundwork for photojournalism.
