I have here for sale a collection of 3 novels bound as one entitled WESTWARD HO! or The Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, ALTON LOCKE Tailor and Poet an Autobiography, and YEAST a Problem all written by Charles Kingsley and published by Macmillan & Co, London, 1889, 1890, 1889 respectively.

Charles Kingsley (1819 – 1875) was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. 'Yeast: A Problem', Kingsley's first novel, originally published in 1848, was written as an attack on Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement, on celibacy, the game laws, bad landlords and bad sanitation. 'Alton Locke' (1849), his third novel set out to expose the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and the trials and tribulations of agricultural labourers. 'Westward Ho!' (1855) his 13th novel is an historical novel which celebrates England's victories over Spain in the Elizabethan era. Although originally a political radical, Kingsley had by the 1850s become increasingly conservative and a strong supporter of overseas expansion.
