Here we offer the April 1895, Volume V, issue of The Bodley Head's hardbound Bohemian periodical, "The Yellow Book." Given a yellow binding to resemble sexually-explicit French novels of the period, "The Yellow Book" featured  works by artists such as Charles Conder, William Rothenstein, John Singer Sargent, Walter Sickert, and Philip Wilson Steer; and literary work by contributors such as suffragette, Evelyn Sharpe, Henry James, Max Beerbohm, Arnold Bennett, "Baron Corvo", Ernest Dowson, George Gissing, Sir Edmund Gosse, Richard Le Gallienne, Charlotte Mew, Arthur Symons, H. G. Wells, William Butler Yeats and Frank Swettenham. The artworks were featured using the latest photographic process, a real innovation at the time. This issue features a story by Henry James, but please see the photographs to peruse the particular contents of this issue.

As is usual for these issues, the book has wear, puckering, and soiling to the boards, period-inscribed endpapers, foxing to the text, and most of the inserted protective tissues remaining. The book's ragged edges are due to the fact that the book was issued with uncut pages--a reader would cut page edges with a letter opener, a razor, or "ink-eraser" as they read.  Though the book may appear to have a loose binding, with exposed gutters, the binding is actually very secure due to surprisingly good-quality binding materials. Some pages may still be uncut. 317 pages, plus a packet of ads. The book measures approximately 8 x 6.5-inches.

This will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very thoughtful gift!

When Oscar Wilde was arrested for indecency, he was seen carrying a yellow French novel, which the press falsely referred to as "The Yellow Book." As a result, the periodical's offices were raided and the editor ousted. To see our entire shelf of banned books, please click HERE.
