Receiver R-108

Military radio receiver R-108/GRC vintage AN/VRC-3 TM11-898 mint NIB 5820-503-1258

Description

This is the military radio receiver R-108/GRC (NATO Stock Number 5820-503-1258). The unit is unused in the original box. As you can see, case and front panel are pristine all around. All military QC stamps are intact and undamaged.

At one point this equipment was completely overhauled and then stored new in a military depot for many years. The box has the year 1962 on it, see the photos.

Included is the original technical manual TM11-898, an addendum to this manual, and a bag with small accessories (probably fuses and/or mounting hardware, not sure)

The military would use this R-108 radio either as a stand-alone receiver, or as part of the larger AN/GRC-3 radio installation which was used on military vehicles. It covered a frequency range of 20 to 28 MHz. Search on the web for “AN/GRC-3” “radionerds” and you will find all the information you would ever need about this installation, including the manuals, also for the R-108.

This equipment was used from the early Fifties all the way into the early Seventies after which it was replaced by the VRC-12 family of radios. This means the VRC-3 family of radios (and thus R-108) has seen service in Korea and in the early Vietnam years.

Please be aware that this equipment was capable of running at either 12V or 24V, depending what vibrator power module is used inside of it. This would either be the PP-281 (12V) or the PP-282 (24V) module.

This PSU module slides inside the designated opening on the receiver chassis (see photo, the opening with the octal socket visible). Since the R-108 receiver being sold here was never issued, the military stored it without the vibrator power supply module. The reason for this is purely logistical; when storing this receiver in the depot, it was not known at what voltage the receiver would eventually be used once put in future service.  So, this is the reason why these receivers when unissued do not have a PSU supply module installed, that would only be installed once the radio would be put in service. Therefore, be aware that the receiver being sold here does NOT have a PSU module installed.

The receiver can also be fed externally with 12V filament voltage and 105V plate voltage if needed, in that case no internal power module is needed.

These receivers are hard to find in mint, unused condition. Don’t let it slip away now by waiting too long!

Shipping and Payment

Shipment will be UPS. I’ll include a USPS shipping option for those areas where that is cheaper or if you need to have it shipped to a P.O. Box. Please make sure you select the right shipping method.

The unit in its original box will be shipped well packed inside a separate shipping box with sufficient bubble wrap padding and fully insured.

In the unlikely case that damage occurs during transport we require the buyer to document this properly by immediately taking detailed pictures of the damage of both the item and the shipping box and keep the box for further inspection before a claim can be made. Without submitting these pictures there will not be reimbursement for the damaged shipment.

International buyers are welcome but email me for a shipping quote first before you buy. The item will be insured and declared for the full amount.

Payment is through PayPal only and needs to be completed within two days after the listing ends.
