Beautiful antique porcelain figurine of an aristocratic gentleman in dashing colours of gold on dark blue, over an inked petticoat.

Samson ware, with gold anchor pseudo-marked to Chelsea. Dated to the 19th century. Produced by Samson, Edmé et Cie of Paris, figurines such as these bear pseudo marks as Samson began his career by making service and set piece replacements in the late 1830s. At this point in their early history, before Samson became a name in and of itself, such reproductions were their top-of-the-line goods.

The true magnificence of Samson emerges when a Chelsea replica becomes more valuable than the original. In art, It is well known that in the midst of the 19th century, the moment came when Samson replicas surpassed their models.
