A SUPERB ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BIRD'S EYE MAPLE PICTURE FRAME ~
... a charming old mount with a lot of age & character with excellent veneers, the border a smooth softly-bevelled ogee affair; comes with a rather charming gilt slip which is showing its age & which contrasts beautifully with its maple sibling & is entirely original to this frame ~

Measuring approximately 24 & 1/8" by 20 & 1/4" (External) ~
With a rebate (to fit a picture) 21 & 7/8" by 17 & 7/8" (Internal) ~
Or, in centimetres 55.5cm by 45.5cm ~
Sight size is 20 & 1/8" by 16 & 1/4" ~
Maple Frames
... these winsome frames date to the 19th century & have bags of character & charm with fine maple veneers to the border which, on this frame, extend to the sides of the frame, not painted black, there are pretty much no major losses that I can see here ~
... such a simple yet elegant frame design the border a lovely slim affair with a smooth bevelled ogee, there is a delightful flecked maple grain here & we have a charming rich honey-coloured tone & the whole thing feels quality ~
... the border has this slight 'ogee' valley making this frame a tactile piece to hold, feels good in the hand, the slip itself is quite a feat of carpentry & is a delightful design with a soft ogee running into the sight-edge, designed to draw your eye into the painting, showing its age yes, yet filled with character ~
... I tend not to pick up too many maple frames these days as many of them can be in pretty poor condition, the wafer-thin hand-milled veneers can often perish in large sections rendering the frame useless but this one is in pretty sound condition for the age ~
... certainly the work of a skilled carpenter / frame-maker, you can still see the ancient nails in the sides of the frame & see in some sections just where the veneers meet, this frame no doubt originally designed to hold a cherished Embroidery or Sampler ~
... I think that this frame has a wonderful naive 'folk' appeal all its own, it also has a sublime sense of early, handcrafted, early Arts & Crafts style ~
This frame will suit a special picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly a frame to grace any wall ~

Condition
In Very Good condition; with only a couple of age commensurate veneer losses, to the corners, as one so often sees (see photo 3) & which are honest losses & which don't detract, in my opinion, from what is a winsome, honest mount & I mention earlier in the listing that the slip whilst nice & bright is showing its age; together with the odd age-commensurate ding to the border, but in truth, nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Super strong corners ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO major damages OR losses ~
Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...

Finding the frames is the tricky bit, I wear a lot of tyre tread & shoe leather on my travels & I reject 99% of the frames that I see based on design OR condition, not to mention price ~ Many of the 'high-end' Interiors glossy magazines World of Interiors / Architectural Digest / Elle Decoration et al, have been promoting antique frame ‘feature-walls’ for many years now has been a famous decorator trend ~
