This very dark and crusty Ogoni mask from Nigeria has such a thick lumpy patina that its facial features are all but obscured, especially the eyes. True to tradition the face has squinty eyes, a slightly upturned pug nose and fat lips. The ears have holes for four earrings that are either missing, or never were, and it has a tall coiffure with a part down the middle. Its most notable detail is the articulated (movable) jaw, using strips of natural fiber for hinges. This causes the mask to "clack" when danced; these dances have incredible leaps, jumps, twirls and shakes (find a video!). The mask is about 10" tall and has no breaks or losses, including the (now) stiff and brittle hinges. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
