I have here for sale a book entitled THE NATURALIST'S LIBRARY conducted by Sir William Jardine.  This volume covers ORNITHOLOGY VOL IV GALLINACEOUS BIRDS, Part II Game Birds.  It is a first edition published by W H Lizars, Edinburgh in 1834.  There are 30 beautiful colour plates in total, all tissue-guarded, a colour vignette to the title page and a b/w frontispiece portrait of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.  

The Naturalists Library, which was a set of 40 volumes in total,  offered the general public a beautiful and informative encyclopaedia of the natural world.  Jardine wrote 15 of the volumes himself and contributed many of the biographical introductions in the series.  The work is renowned for the quality of the steel engravings by William Home Lizars, Jardine's brother-in-law.

Half dark green leather on grey cloth hardboards.  5 raised bands, black leather title and volume blocks, both with gilt lettering.  Boards firm and in mint condition.  Bookplate to the front endpaper for Patricia Hall.  Pages clean and tightly bound throughout. Condition: fine/mint.  175 pages of text and 30 plates.  17 x 11 cm.
