Antique C. 1880s Crown Pleater Fluting Crimper Sad Iron North Bro’s Clamp Brass PA Gift

Antique late 1800’s Crown Pleater Fluting Crimper made by North Bro’s Mfg. Co. 

Marked Crown Pat. Nov. 1875 July 1877 Reissued Mar. 1880.

Bottom is marked North Bro’s M’f’g Co. Philadelphia PA.

These type of irons were used to crimp fabric such as collars, cuffs and ruffling on shirts. Crimped shirt collars and cuffs were popular during the mid to late 19th century.

Rods were heated (not included) then inserted into the brass fluting barrels. The fabric was then put between the barrels and by turning of the attached wood handled crank, the fabric was rolled between the two barrels, the heat crimping the fabric.

There is a front clamp to secure the fluting machine to a work surface.

Condition:

Great antique patina in pre-owned condition with wear as pictured (may have scratches, wear, marks, rust, paint wear, scratches, corrosion, etc). Has areas of rust, paint wear, etc.  Crank mechanism worked when tested.  Has not been restored.
