Note: These were made by the women of the Northern California tribes: from caring for lands where the various native plants where harvested to make the baskets, to preparing and selecting the plant materials they needed for weaving the meticulously designed basket and finally the complex execution of making these masterpieces of their culture in the customary triple-strand twined weaving of the baskets.

Literature: See Larry Dalrymple, “Basketmakers of California and the Great Basin”

We have provided images of other comparable baskets that are in museums. One such basket has been confirmed to be by the Master Basket-weaver Elizabeth Hickox, which was acquired by Grace Nicholson (who became Hickox dealer of her infamous baskets) when she first met Elizabeth. We Note that Hickox basket making did evolve from the traditional Karuk basket weave and such as this fancy basket, which was made for its artistry and display.
