Turgesh (突騎施 in traditional Chinese) was a Turkic tribal confederation.  They emerged as an independent power after the demise of the western Turks and

established a khaganate in 699 AD.  Turgesh Khaganate lasted until 766 AD when the Karluks defeated them.

Prior of independence, the Turgesh were ruled by a subordinate tutuk, later shad, of the Western Turkic Khaganate's Onog elites.  Turgesh leaders belonged to

Duolu division and held the title chur.    The first Turgesh Kaghan Wuzhile was a leader of a Manichaean consortium.  He established the Turgesh Khaganate

in 699.  In 703, the Turgesh captured Suyab from Tang dynasty (唐王朝).  In 706 his son Saqal succeeded him.

Saqal attacked Tang city of Qiuci (亀茲, Kucha) in 708 and inflicted a defeat on Tang in 709.  However Saqal's younger brother Zhenu rebelled and sought military

support from Qapaqan Khaghan of the Second Turkic Khaganate in 708.  Qapaghan Khagan defeated the Turgesh in 711 in the Battle of Bolchu, and killed both Saqal

and Zhenu.  In 714 the Turgesh elected Suluk as their khagan.

Suluk (蘇禄 in traditional Chinese) was a Turkic tribe leader and a warlord who defended Transoxiana against Arab Umayyad Caliphate armies in early 8th century.

Suluk defeated Xian on June of July of 717, besieging Aksu and Uch Turfan along the way.  He declared himself as khagan during August or September.  Chinese

Emperor Xuanzong (玄宗帝) had to accept Suluk's independence and titled him as the Duke of Shunguo (順国公) in 718.

With his eastern flank secured, beginning by 721, Suluk fought against the Arab Umayyad armies for ten years.  Backed by other local powers, his operations were

generally hit and run operations.  Although his army was much smaller than of the Arabs, Suluk found success through his familiarity with the local area.  Thoughout

the conflicts, the Arab army had to withdraw.  In 735, Suluk attacked Beshbaliq, however his forces was crushed by Tang's armies.  Another defeat in 737 sealed

Suluk's fate.  He was killed in 737 or 738 by Baqa Tarkhan, one of his relatives.
