Mid-century Japanese Menuki Cufflinks.
Crafted in Japan in Menuki style, a sword handle decoration in Edo period Japan. These cast copper figures were intended as cufflinks and depict the beloved Japanese folklore figures of Shojo, known for having a fondness for liquor. The shaggy hair figure holds a long sake ladle as his identifying feature. Here dressed in traditional Edo period jinbaori and hakama. The details depicted in various mixed metal washes. The flat back in a gold wash with angled post stamped “JAPAN” on one side and a whale-back.
Condition: Pre-owned, Good - Signs of wear with use and age.
