Ariobarzanes I Philo-Roman (Ancient Greek: Ἀριοβαρζάνης Φιλορωμαίος, Ariobarzánēs Philorōmaíos) was nominal king of Cappadocia between 93 and 63 BC. In practice, he was unable to consummate his reign due to constant war with the Pontian king Mithridates the Great, who expelled him three times from Cappadocia. He was reinstated to the throne thanks to the help of Rome on two occasions, until he abdicated in favor of his son Ariobarzanes II Philopator in 63 BC. c.
He was elected by the people after the Roman senate rejected the claims of Ariarates IX. Backed by the consul Sulla he took control of a kingdom that Rome considered a protectorate.
**He was deposed three times by Tigranes II of Armenia, before securing his kingdom, and even expanding it with Pompey during the Third Mithridatic War. He abdicated in favor of his son Ariobarzanes II Philopator.
