This was the 25th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in The Hague, Netherlands. Israel, having won in both 1978 and 1979, declined to host it for a second successive year. Nineteen countries took part this year, with Monaco and the previous year's winner Israel deciding not to participate, with Turkey returning. Morocco, notably, made its only appearance in the contest. It was a second win for Ireland, who had also won in 1970, with a best place finish for the German entry in second place and a creditable third place for the U.K.
