(1909-1999).
Wonderful
sculptural piece with very defined rich colour glass. The simplicity of the
design is quite obviously that of the master, perfectly executed, and an
effortless design statement.
Magnificently
handmade, sculpted using Sommerso process to create a striking and contrasting
object. A
stunning hand made solid sculpture piece cased in clear glass with wonderful
silver-grey colors.
The
Sommerso technique was originally developed in the 1930's by Antonio Da Ross.
Sommerso (Italian for "submerged") is the Murano glassmaking
technique of creating two or more layers of contrasting glass without the
colours mixing together. It is formed by dipping coloured glass into molten
glass of a different colour, before blowing the glass into the required form.
The outermist layer is often clear.
A
charming vintage fish-shaped Murano glass sculpture by Archimede Seguso in
clear glass with black stripe and silver net.
This
unique mid-century Art glass piece is beautifully handcrafted in clear murano
glass with silver filigrana-reticello fine stripping and clear glass accenting
the fish's eyes, mouth and fins. Filigrana or filigree, is a term for a
transparent glass with opaque or colorful threads or ribbon-like decoration.
There are two styles of filigrana are reticello and retortoli. Italian
Reticello, “glass with a small network” or reticulated glass, consists of
several layers which overlap across, this is a decorative style that uses a web
design to form a mesh effect. This wonderful fish is created with extreme
precision and care in Reticello glass technique.
This
fine example of Italian Art glass from Seguso would make a great addition to
any collection of Venetian and Murano Art Glass.
“Archimede
Seguso, Murano” Hand Signed on Bottom.
About
the artist: Archimede Seguso was an Italian glass manufacturer known for his
intricate glass vases, necklaces, and sculptures. Spanning a wide range of
forms and colors, his subject matter included animals and abstract shapes. Born
in 1909 in Murano, Italy, he was part of an illustrious legacy of Italian
glassmakers, their ancestry spanning over six centuries to the 14th century.
Seguso notably led a revival of ancient Venetian glass-making techniques,
specifically filigrana, which produced lattice-like patterns. Seguso ran the
family business Seguso Vetri d'Arte, from 1937 to 1942.
In
addition to his participation in 13 appearances in the Venice Biennale between
1936 and 1972, Archimede Seguso was also invited to participate in the exhibit
“A Thousand Years of Glass in Venice” at the Museo Correr in 1982, and he had a
solo exhibit of his work at Tiffany & Co. in New York in 1989.
Archimede
died one decade later, in 1999, in Murano. The Seguso glass studio lives on
though, as does Archimede Seguso's name, through his masterful glass creations
still found today in numerous international collections and museums, including
the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York,
and the Corning Museum of Glass.
