About the Book

This edition was published in the last year of Voltaire's life and was originally published in 1759-1753 under the French title Histoire de l'Empire de Russie sous Pierre le Grand. The book's title continues "published from a manuscript sent him by the Court of Petersburg' and is a study of Russia and Russian cities, government, laws, trade, history, wars, religion, and conquests abroad. The book is illustrated with a small fold-out map to the front of volume 1 of Russia or Moscovy in Europe which show from Tobol in the east to Prussia in the west, and from the frozen ocean and Russian Lapland in the north to Crimea and the Sea of Asoph in the south.

Condition

The leather is rubbed to both volumes, with the leather to the edges of volume two having some surface scuffing. The front joint of vol 2 is starting to weaken. The contents of the books are in very good condition for age, the map with two small marginal tears, not affecting the map itself.
