Chinese Art: "Crab Apple Vendor" 卖糖人, Ni ren Zhang 泥人张 Type Clay Figurine
This man is a seller of candied crab apples, once a common sight on the streets of Beijing and elsewhere across North China. It is a contemporary work, acquired at a store in Beijing in the 1980s. Although the box has no credits, it appears to be of a type associated with "Ni ren Zhang" ("Mr. Zhang, the maker of clay figures"), which is now used as the name of a business in Tianjin. This may be their product.
The figurine is about 9 inches tall (23 cm). The clay body, head and hand are low-fired pottery, with some mold and hand work, painted after firing. The stick holding crab apples is inserted into the hand.
  The padded cardboard box measures approximately 9.5 x 6 x 4 inches (24 x 14 x 10 cm).
