Chinese Art: Song-Yuan Period Cizhou 磁州 (Tz’u-Chou) Bud Vase - Modern Reproduction
This stoneware vase is 7 inches tall (18 cm), 3.5 inches in diameter at the belly; the base is 2.25 inches in diameter. The decoration is a combination of brown painted areas and white (reserved) ones, all covered by a clear glaze. The rim of the base is not glazed (see scan).

Cizhou wares were extremely successful during the Song and Yuan periods (c. 960-1368) and several kilns in North China, especially modern-day Hebei province, flourished then; they served a broad audience and fulfilled many utilitarian purposes.

This reproduction was made for the Cultural Relics Bureau authorities; it was acquired at the shop of the Palace Museum in Beijing in the 1980s.
