I have here for sale a TWO VOLUME SET of books entitled THE LIFE OF PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY by EDWARD DOWDEN In Two Volumes VOLS I and II published by Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., London, in 1886.  First edition.  Here we have a detailed biography of poet and writer Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major English Romantic Poets, whose extraordinary life included family crises, ill health, a backlash against his atheism, political views, defiance of social conventions, and self exile in Italy before a boating accident caused his death at the age of 29.  Volume I includes 3 full-page b/w plates, and Volume II includes 6 full-page b/w plates, one of which is a fold-out facsimile of the Dedication to "The Revolt of Islam".

Burgundy cloth boards with gilt lettering and gilt shield on the front board.  Minor marks with wear to the corners.  Gilt lettering on the spines with fading, and fraying to the top, bottom and along the hinges.  Black endpapers with the bookplate of Walter Sidney Scott on the front endpapers.  Light foxing to prelims and title pages.  Both hinges of volume I are cracked, with the front hinge of volume II slightly cracked, but all pages are firm and the books are in very good condition.  Vol I: x, 554 pages.  Vol II: vii, 586 pages.  23 x 15 cm.
