It's Paris 1899, the quiet of a still and misty night is pierced by a series of screams coming from the four storey house on the corner of the Rue Morgue. Inside two women are found dead and the prefect of Police (Ian McShane) is baffled. There is no apparent motive for the crimes and only two obvious clues. Judging by the state of the victims, the murders were committed by someone of immense power and strength & the only possible means of escape is through a fourth storey window, but all the windows appear to be nailed shut from the inside.
Claire (Rebecca De Mornay) is hoping the case will pique her fathers interest, for Auguste Dupin (George C Scott) once France's finest detective, seems to have lost his sense of purpose after his enforced retirement from the police force. Even the visit of close friend Phillipe (Val Kilmer) does nothing to increase his interest in the case. Dupin remains indifferent to the case until he is galvanised into action when Claire's fiance Adolphe (Neil Dickson) is arrested for the crime. All of Dupin's old instincts start to resurface as he resolves to solve The Murders in The Rue Morgue.
