HOLLYWOOD HISTORY: OLD 16mm FILM MOVIE TRAILERS FOR 1950s TV plus RADIO PROMO LP

Among my parents’ memorabilia, I found these trailers.  In the late 1940s to the early 1950s my parents lived in Charleston, W. Va.  My father had a haberdashery shop there, Lee’s Shop for Men, located at 216 7th Avenue in South Charleston.  My father was friendly with other business owners in town which included local movie houses, likely the Kearse or Custer Theaters, as well as local tv and radio stations.  I suspect that is how he came into possession of these films.

These items were previously in separate listings.  Decided to combine them as they are all part of Mid-Century Hollywood History!

In this LOT are the following items (see below for details and history for each item).  Happy to provide many more images, please request if you are interested.

ITEM DETAILS:

1.  BIRTH OF THE DETECTIVE STORY PLOT!  EDGAR ALLEN POE’S PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE, 1954, ORIGINAL b/w TRAILER, 16mm, 7” REEL

Film cast includes:  Karl Malden as Dr.Marais, Claude Dauphin as Inspector Bonnard, Patricia Medina as Jeanette, and Steve Forrest as Prof. Paul Dupin.

According to http://paulivester.com/films/runtimes.htm this full 7” reel is approximately 400 ft and would have a run time of about 11 minutes.

A NOTE ABOUT THE PLOT:  This film is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s “Murders in the Rue Morgue”, published in 1841.  What makes this story especially noteworthy:  Here Poe originates the plot of the classic ‘detective story’.

ABOUT THIS FILM:

According to the TCM website regarding Cult Films:

“Warner Bros. was the first major studio to release a film in 3-D following the surprise box-office hit Bwana Devil (1952), which had been produced independently by Arch Oboler. House of Wax (1953), the offering from Warners, proved to be an enormous hit and helped to establish Vincent Price as the premier horror star of the era. Every studio followed suit by rushing 3-D films into production, although too often B-pictures were given the stereo treatment without much care so that the studio could demand a larger rental fee from exhibitors; the slapdash nature of some of the releases helped to hasten the end of the 3-D boom. Warner Bros. kept a high standard for their stereoscopic productions, however, releasing the big budget The Charge at Feather River (1953), probably the best of the many 3-D Westerns to emerge during the cycle. Following another western, The Moonlighter (1953), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, Warners decided to try and repeat the success they had with House of Wax by making a carbon copy; the result was the Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954).”

Condition:  I have not screened this film, only disclosing what I can observe.  It appears this could be several sections of spliced film because I can see what appears to be a light colored strip in several sections.  I can see a couple of places where there is old scotch tape and I cannot tell if this is a splice or was a break in the film.  There may also be a broken sprocket here and there, again hard to tell because I have not screened this, just examined the first several feet.

2.  JOHN WAYNE IN HONDO, 1953, ORIGINAL b/w TRAILER, 16mm, 2 SPOOLS

BASED ON THE NOVEL BY LOUIS L’AMOUR.

ALSO STARRING GERALDINE PAIGE.

Spool sizes:  3 1/4” & 4 3/4”

According to Wikipedia:
“Hondo is a 1953 Warnercolor 3D Western film directed by John Farrow and starring John Wayne and Geraldine Page. The screenplay is based on the July 5, 1952 Collier's short story "The Gift of Cochise" by Louis L'Amour. The book Hondo was a novelization of the film also written by L'Amour, and published by Gold Medal Books in 1953.[3] The supporting cast features Ward Bond, James Arness and Leo Gordon.

The shoot went over schedule, and Farrow had to leave the production as he was contractually obligated to direct another movie. The final scenes featuring the Apache attack on the circled wagons of the Army and settlers were shot by John Ford, whom Wayne had asked to finish the film; Ford was uncredited for this work.[4]
An initial restoration of Hondo was overseen by Wayne's son Michael, head of Batjac Productions, in the late 1980s culminating in a syndicated broadcast of the film in June 1991 on American over-the-air stations in anaglyph 3D. 3D glasses were sold to viewers, with proceeds going to charity.
A frame-by-frame digital restoration by Prasad Corporation of the film was later completed, and the DVD of it was released on October 11, 2005.
A restored 3D theatrical version was exhibited for a week in 2015 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and also projected the following year at New York's Film Forum, introduced at both venues by Michael Wayne's wife Gretchen Wayne.
The script focuses on psychological descriptions and the drama of the Native Americans from New Mexico. The original book depicted the events taking place in Southeast of what is now Arizona. The action scenes and the 3D photography are also highpoints of the film.
John Farrow, the director, and Michael Pate, who played Vittoro, were both Australian. The Second Unit Director is Andrew McLaglen, who later directed the Wayne vehicles McLintock! and The Undefeated.
Film footage from Hondo was later incorporated into the opening sequence of Wayne's last film, The Shootist, to illustrate the backstory of Wayne's character.
This film marked one of the first appearances of Geraldine Page, who had been a popular stage actress.
Part of a 1988 episode of Married... with Children, entitled "All in the Family", has Al Bundy readying himself to watch Hondo in peace during a three-day weekend, but Peggy's family comes to visit, and their ensuing problems prevent him from seeing the film, just as their antics prevented him from seeing Shane the year before. Moreover, a 1994 episode of Married... with Children, entitled "Assault and Batteries", has a subplot in which Al is desperate not to miss a television airing of Hondo because, as he explains, it is the best John Wayne movie and it only airs "once every 17 years". Al does miss this airing at the end of the episode and will have to wait until February 18, 2011 to see it again.  Al holds the film in very high esteem, once telling Peggy's family members, "Your lives are meaningless compared to Hondo!"
One of the most prevalent images of John Wayne remains a full-length publicity photo from the film in which Wayne wears the buckskin suit and military hat.
The two male and female main character names from Hondo ("Lane" and "Mrs. Lowe") reappear in John Wayne's 1973 western film The Train Robbers, with Ann-Margret instead of Geraldine Page as Mrs. Lowe.
NBA legend John Havlicek of the Boston Celtics got his nickname "Hondo" from the film.
Hondo Lane's wanted poster is hanging on the wall of the Sheriff's office in the movie Rio Lobo."
Condition:  This footage is on spools, therefore, I have not been able to run it so am not sure if this is a trailer or simply footage, but its condition appears to be good and what portion of the film I have unspooled was not brittle.

3.  LAND OF THE PHARAOHS STARRING JOAN COLLINS, 1955, ORIGINAL b/w TRAILER, 16mm, 2 SPOOLS:  3 3/4” and 4”

According to Wikipedia:

“Land of the Pharaohs is a 1955 American epic film in Cinemascope and WarnerColor from Warner Bros., produced and directed by Howard Hawks, that stars Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Khufu (also known as Cheops) and Joan Collins as his second wife Nellifer. The film is a fictional account of the building of the Great Pyramid. Novelist William Faulkner was one of the film's three screenwriters.

Land of the Pharaohs literally had a cast of thousands (Warner Bros. press office claimed there were 9,787 extras in one scene) and was one of Hollywood's largest-scale, ancient world epics, made in the same spirit as The Robe, The Ten Commandments, and Ben Hur. The film was shot on location in Egypt and in Rome's Titanus studios.  The film drew more interest over the years and has been defended by Martin Scorsese, French critics supporting the auteur theory, and for numerous elements of its physical production. Danny Peary in his book Cult Movies (1981), selected it as a cult classic.  The film's reputation continues to improve with the test of time. As of 2013, Land of the Pharaohs holds 71% "fresh" rating at the film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes."

Condition:  These films are on spools so other than unspooling some footage to take pictures for this listing, I have not screened them but they look to be in very good condition; the film is not brittle.

“Official Championship Fights Film of Marciano & Charles”

These vinyl recordings were given by the theatre owner or radio station owner to my father.  Businesses were located in Charleston, West Virginia.
