ORIGINAL STEEL LINE ENGRAVING DRAWN BY THOMAS ALLOM
PUBLISHED 1843 BY FISHER, SON & CO LONDON, IN A BOOK ENTITLED "CHINA IN A SERIES OF VIEWS"
DRAWN BY T ALLOM
This series of fine plates represent an interesting period in Britain's involvement with China and the emergence of Hong Kong as a commercial centre. Following the British Invasion in 1839 and the occupation of the island, China ceded Hong Kong to Britain in 1841. The peace of Nanking in 1842 brought to an end the first Optium war and opened up the trade, allowing people like Thomas Allom to visit.
