Ronald McDonald is a clown who is the primary mascot of the McDonald's all-American restaurant chain for over 50 years. He is the "Chief Happiness Officer" of the company since 2003. In television commercials, the clown inhabits a fantasy world called McDonaldland, and has adventures with his friends Grimace, Hamburglar, Birdie the Early Bird, and more. He was first portrayed on television by Willard Scott in 1963 and various actors afterwards.

Grimace is a character featured in McDonaldland commercials. He is Ronald McDonald’s best friend.

Grimace is a large, purple, rotund being of indeterminate species with short arms and legs. He is known for his slow witted yet optimistic demeanor. Grimace sometimes goes for long periods of time without speaking; when he does speak he is known for saying "duh" before every sentence.

Grimace originally debuted as a large purple being with four arms and two legs who loved milkshakes. After that first campaign, Grimace was reintroduced in his modern form, with his number of arms reduced by two.

Mayor McCheese is the mayor of McDonaldland, the fictional world seen in McDonald's commercials. He has an enormous cheeseburger for a head. He is voiced by Howard Jones and later Bob Joles
The Captain, known as Captain Crook until 1984, is a McDonaldland pirate character appearing in commercials. First seen in 1971, he is similar in appearance to the famed Captain Hook from the 1953 Disney film Peter Pan. The character is comparable to the Hamburglar, but rather than hoarding hamburgers, he tries to steal Filet-O-Fish sandwiches.

In later commercials, known simply as The Captain, his appearance was modified to make him to look less sinister (and somewhat Muppet-like). He was dropped from McDonaldland commercials following streamlining of the characters in the 1980s. His last appearance would be a small role in The Adventures of Ronald McDonald: McTreasure Island.

The Happy Meal Gang is a group of McDonaldland characters who comprise the McDonald's Happy Meal. There is Hamburger, French Fries, and Soft Drink, later joined with Cookies, and the McNugget Buddies.

The lineup slightly changed in September 2001: they would be joined by the Happy Meal Box and Toy Bag, the Fries changed from male to female, and they would all be given bow ties as an accessory.

In the 1980s, the Happy Meal Gang received a makeover that included the addition of McDonald's Golden Arches on their pattern (Fries, Soft Drink), and Hamburger wearing a red bow tie instead of the original blue one. Cookies would be retired during this phase.

The Talking Trash Cans of McDonaldland were anthropomorphic garbage bins that appeared in a few McDonald's commercials in the 1970s during McDonaldland. They were talking trash bins that accepted garbage the kids would dispose of after finishing their food at McDonald's.
