EMILIO EDUARDO DE GOGORZA (BROOKLYN, NEW YORK MAY 29, 1872 – NEW YORK CITY MAY 10, 1949)

As a child he came to Spain and received his education there. Later he sang as a boy in the Choir of the Brompton Oratory in London. The Duke of Norfolk urged professional vocal studies, which he did in North America. In Paris he was a student of the pedagogue Bourgeois. In the United States, he studied with Moderati and Agramonte in New York. He made his debut in New York in 1897, in which the famous prima donna Marcella Sembrich also appeared, which he then accompanied on a tour as an assisting artist. He quickly became known as a concert singer in America. For many years he was the artistic director of the Victor Company. He never appeared on stage, allegedly because a strong myopia prevented him from performing on stage. For several years he had been married to the celebrated soprano Emma Eames (1865-1952), with whom he also made extensive concert tours. In total, he has performed in 17 major concert tours in North America; there he sang as a soloist with all leading orchestras and was the focus of numerous music festivals. He performed until the 1930s and has also been teaching since the mid-1920s. From 1926 to 40 he was director of the singing department of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His students included John Brownlee and Conrad Thibault. The artist had one of the most beautiful baritone voices of his time, distinguished both by its dark tonality and by its musical expressiveness.
