I. CONDITION
Good. USED. Previously owned. Minimal use. Well maintained.
• Item’s Background - Retired collector's Estate Sale Item, Pasadena, Ca.
• Working Condition – Adequate. This Salter Letter Scale is fully functional and performs pretty much as originally intended. Remember: each hanging-spring scale is unique accuracy-wise.
Note - The fine-tuning adjustment (tare) thumb screw on the back side is stiff, apparently requiring oil, so the scale currently balances out consistently a little on the low side across its 0 - 24 oz. range. However, upon testing, the discrepancy is 100% consistent across the scale's entire weight range. The tare screw problem could be addressed for perfected performance.
Many other scales out there are merely approximately accurate - just barely adequate enough for their intended purpose. This scale is pretty much standard.
• Cosmetic Condition – Shows Well. MINIMAL wear, marring, pitting, or corrosion.
• Bottom Line - This is a handsome classic antique British Royal Mail postal scale at a very reasonable price.

• Age - Vintage, likely 1920s - 1930s. Pre WWII. (est.) The Salter Model 11 type postal scale was first produced starting in 1910 and continued thru 1957. Based on the postal rates presented, this version of the Model 11 is likely 1930's.
• Current Retail Replacement Value - Difficult to determine. Comparably accurate vintage metric brass balance-scale type weights are occasionally available on the internet, particularly on eBay.

Key Features:
• Functionality - Totally old-fashioned, but fully serviceable. The Salter Model No. 11 postal scale weighed up to 24 oz on the outer-dial with the contemporaneous pence postal rate on the inner-dial.
• Practical Use - In this era of accurate digital-electric scales, old fashioned spring-type scales may be a bit obsolete, but these scales remain an excellent attractive nostalgic curio display piece.
• Component Materials – Cast iron frame with aluminum letter platform.
• General Maintenance - This item will eventually tarnish a bit in air, but only slightly. Every 5 years or so, I recommend a casual wiping something slightly acidic like vinegar followed by a gentle brush grooming, and a final wipe-down with WD-40® to retard further dulling.
