I have for sale a book entitled COMMENTAIRES SUR LA RETRAITE DES DIX-MILLE DE XENOPHON, ou Nouveau Traite de la Guerre, a l'usage des jeunes officiers par M. Le Cointe. It is a first edition published by Chez Nyon, Saillant et Desaint in Paris in 1766. Written in French. Two maps, one showing the Retraite des Dix Mille l'an 400 BC and the others shows La Bataille de Cunaxa in 400 BC. The book is divided into Tome I and II and further into Livres I-VII, each new Livre has an illustrated head and tail piece and capital letter.
The Ten Thousand (Ancient Greek: οἱ Μύριοι, hoi Myrioi) were a force of mercenary units, mainly Greeks, employed by Cyrus the Younger to attempt to wrest the throne of the Persian Empire from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Their march to the Battle of Cunaxa and back to Greece (401–399 BC) was recorded by Xenophon, one of their leaders, in his work Anabasis.
Bound in light brown half calf on orange marbled hardboards. Gilt bands, black leather title block and gilt lettering to the spine. Partial split to front joint and slight wear to head and tail of the spine. Title page at the start of the book is handwritten (the printed one is missing). Title page is there for Tome Second. 357 + 580 pages. 16 x 10 cm.
