I have here for sale a book entitled JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE by John Hanning Speke.  It is the First Edition published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London in 1863.  It is a fine binding copy but also is housed in a purpose built dark brown presentation box with felt lining and a lovely brown leather inset title block to the spine of the box with gilt lettering.   There should be two maps in a pouch at the end of the book but there is no pouch in this copy.  However, one of the maps, the one of Eastern Equatorial Africa, is presented here in facsimile separately in a blue envelope.  There are 26 full page plates and many other in-text illustrations.

Bound in half calf leather on marbled hardboards.  5 raised bands, gilt decoration, black leather title block and gilt lettering to the spine.  Some small holes in the marbled paper to the front board.  Marbled endpapers and page edges.  Pages clean and firm.  A lovely copy presented beautifully in a mint condition box.  xxxi, 658 pages.   Book measures 22 cm x 14 cm.  Box measures 25 cm x 18 cm.
