WWII Royal Hungarian Air Force Pilot Aviator Dress Dagger
The Kingdom of Hungary fought as part of the Axis powers in
the Invasion of Yugoslavia, against the Soviet Union as part of the Luftwaffe
VIII. Fliegerkorps on the Eastern Front and also in the Battle for Hungary
against the USAAF as well as the Red Army Air Force.
Beginning March 1944, Allied bomber raids began on Hungary
and progressively increased in intensity. The 101st "Puma" fighter
group (later wing) was a small but elite unit of the MKHL fighting the
overwhelming might of the US 15th Air Force.
At first the white cross fighters were thought to be an elite reserve force of the Luftwaffe by the USAAF. In a way they were right.
Late in 1944 all efforts were redirected towards countering
the advancing Red Army, but to no avail.
Some Hungarian Air Force units fought on after the fall of
Hungary, operating from Austria or Germany until the end of the war.
All fighting in Hungary ended on 16 April 1945.
