THE 1st WATERMARK 1d RED KANGAROO WAS ISSUED ON 2 JANUARY 1913 (IN SYDNEY) AND ON 4 JANUARY 1913 IN MELBOURNE OFF THE J.B. COOKE PLATES… IT IS BELIEVED THAT NINE PLATES WERE USED TO PRINT THIS ICONIC STAMP AND ARCHIVAL RECORDS SHOW THAT PLATES A, B & C PRODUCED KANGAROO STAMPS IN THE DIE I STATE, STAMPS FROM PLATES D, E & F WERE DIE II AND THOSE FROM PLATES G, H & K WERE ALL DIE IIA. THE STAMP WAS USED AS 'THE STANDARD LETTER AND POSTCARD RATE' WITHIN AUSTRALIA AND THE BRITISH EMPIRE; ALSO FOR 'COMMERCIAL PAPERS' WITHIN AUSTRALIA AND THE EMPIRE AS WELL AS THE 'MAGAZINE RATE' TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES. PLATE E WAS LOCATED FIRST IN THE UPPER LEFT POSITION ABOVE PLATE F (IN THE FOUR PLATE CONFIGURATION SEE ABOVE) AND THEN POST NOVEMBER 1913 IN THE UPPER POSITION ABOVE PLATE F (IN A TWO PLATE FORMAT). PLATE E WAS USED FROM FEBRUARY 1913 THROUGH TO FEBRUARY 1914. THIS IS A VERY NICE SELECTION OF ADAMS PLATE E LISTED VARIETIES COMPRISING PLATE POSITIONS: EL26+EL27+EL29+EL46+ER41+ER42+ER47+ER48. The definitive reference for the Australian 1d Red Kangaroo stamp by David Adams, Bill Bell and Greg Pope entitled: 1d RED KANGAROO AND MAP SERIES (2004) describes these varieties as:

EL26 (Scarcity 1): Upper inner frame: 1.0mm break starting 0.5mm from right frame.
EL27: (Non-Variety Stamp in PAIR)
EL29 (Scarcity 4): I of AUSTRALIA and shading above and below: in its final form shows a dent in upper frame, 3.25mm from right frame (inconstant), breaks in upper inner frame and line 1 down, notch on inner side of base of I and breaks in lines 2 to 12 below I, 3.75mm from right frame.  Earlier printings show primarily the breaks in lines 2 and 3 and the notch on inner side of base of I".
EL46 (Scarcity 5): Shading to left of Cape Leveque: 0.5mm break in line 2 above Cape, 2.5 to 3.0mm from left frame. Not in early printings.

ER41: (Non-Variety Stamp in PAIR)
ER42 (Scarcity 1): Shading below L of AUSTRALIA: colour spot between lines 1 to 3, 4.75mm from right frame.
ER47 *FIRST STATE (Scarcity 7): Shading above EN of PENNY: almost 0.5mm breaks in lines 8 and 9, starting 7.5mm from right frame. Not in early printings.
SECOND STATE (Scarcity 9):
(a) As before.
(b) Shading near and mainly above value circle: break in shading line one below top of value circle at right and line two below does not always touch value circle completely at 8.5mm from left frame. A scratch then continues above circle in a slightly curved or crescent shaped form to shading line six above. Sometimes not all lines are broken but weakness is usually evident. There is also evidence of a possible retouch at 1 o'clock on value circle. Not in early printings.
THIRD STATE (Scarcity 9):
(a) As before.
(b) As before; except there is now a break in the value circle at 1 o'clock and no evidence of a retouch.
(c) A second separate scratch is now approximately 0.5mm to the right of (b) almost lying parallel and breaking a maximum of five shading lines. Not in early printings.
ER48 (Scarcity 1): Shading above Y of PENNY: 0.5mm break in line 8 and a smaller break in line 9, 2.0mm from right frame. Flaw not present in this example.
