English archaeologist and artist Jessie Mothersole's walk along the 73 miles of Hadrian's Wall. She explores the history of the wall, and the walks from from Wallsend to Bewcastle. Illustrated with 6 colour plates, 8 plates in monochrome, two folding maps, and smaller drawings within the text.
Jessie Mothersole (b. 1874) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and was a talented watercolourist, travelling through the Middle East and Egypt. She had planned to write her book on Hadrian's Wall in 1914 but the Great War delayed it until the early 1920s.
Good condition for age. There is mild rubbing to the cloth and a previous owner's neat name to the ffep. Light foxing to the page edges (untrimmed to fore-edge). All plates are present, as are both maps. Publisher's slip tipped in at the introduction stating the original watercolours will be on show at the Walker Galleries of Bond Street.
